Redgrave, Vanessa

British actress. The daughter of Michael Redgrave, she made her London stage debut in 1958 and won praise as Rosalind in As You Like It (1961). Her performances in such movies as Morgan! (1966), Blow-Up (1966), Camelot (1967), Isadora (1968), Mary, Queen of Scots (1971), and Julia (1977, Academy Award) won her critical adulation, and she was acclaimed as one of the world's greatest actresses. Though criticized for her left-wing political activism, especially on behalf of Palestinians, she continued to win acclaim for her work on stage and screen. Her later films included The Bostonians (1984), Howards End (1992), and Mrs. Dalloway (1998). Her sister Lynn (born 1944) has had a distinguished stage career in London and New York, much of it in the classical repertory. Highlights of her film career include her performances in Georgy Girl (1966), Shine (1996), and Gods and Monsters (1998).
